ABSTRACT

Existed studies of television historical-drama Deep-rooted Tree discuss counter tendency by focusing on new possibility as television historical-drama mainly. The objective of this paper is analyzing counter and dominant tendency by considering universal property of public narrative that it has duality of discourse. And it is contemplating how meaning of the drama turns through double-voiced discourse, too. Deep-rooted Tree deactivates historical recode on purpose by noting blank of historical recode, especially makes Sejong unfamiliar. Reinterpretation about Sejong starts from naming him Lee Do. The drama calls in imperfect and human Lee Do instead of Sejong as a great king. It is located Lee Bangwon and Jung Gijoon at the opposite. By maximizing overcoming of adversity and confrontation of Lee Do and antagonist reinforces heroic growth narrative. Focusing persuasion, integration in overcoming of adversity and character of the common people-Soi, Gang chaeyoon is interesting. It reflectes the now-here public desire. That is the very point where it distinguishes Deep-rooted Tree from existed television historical-drama. By standing out this point, Deep-rooted Tree yields counter discourse. But it is not all. This drama has checked reflecting the now-here public desire and enforcing heroic growth narrative by deactivating history before. By enforcing heroic growth narrative, this drama produces dominant ideology beyond counter discourse. Deep-rooted Tree is fantasy that meets now-here public under the power and king top of the power in history. But by running into limitation that history and heroic growth narrative, this drama can not make perfect fantasy.
