A Study of Adaptation of <A lucky day(Unsu joeun Nal)> as a Play Text - Focused on 3 Plays on the Basis of Novel <A lucky Day> -

ABSTRACT

This article has intended to study adapting from a novel to a play text focused on 3 plays on the basis of <A Lucky Day>. The adaptation case studies of <A Lucky Day> in Pusan can have a differentiated point in that it can view various adaptation aspects within a medium as well as survey the media shift<A lucky day> of ‘Nory’ is a combined play of intertextuality between Talchum(masked dance) and original novel. It is oriented toward masked dance play in the style and make connection with the novel <A lucky day> in the content. The change in the play text is the creation of ‘Dokaebi’. Dokaebi is a main character as well as the protagonist ‘Kim Chumgi’ and is a constituent crucial for the play's features of style and content. The play episode of Dokaebi makes the play text a open structure and effectively accomplish the basic esthetics ‘playfulness’ and ‘Shinmyung-puri(aesthetic pleasure of Korean traditional performing arts)’. However, the expansion and concentration on playful scene diminish the foundation of thematic expression, ‘the irony of life’, leading to attenuation of the intention ‘ironic tragedy'. <Unark> is the adapted play text of original novel in total theatre style. This play extends the time of original based on the ritualistic motif, which is hidden in ‘resentment(Han)' and ‘death'. In other words, it adds temporality from wife's death to going on the road to Hades to the narrative of the original novel. The ritualistic motif created many characters of underworld including a messenger of death and Ogusin. Their appearance is actively involved in being a total theatre shifts as well as the realistic atmosphere of original into surrealistic one. In addition, the dramatizer of <Unark> tries to seek the solution integrating ‘life irony' into ‘fate'. For this, ‘Palza' and ‘fortune-teller(Jumjangyi)' were created and ‘human' and ‘fate' have been considered through different fate's orientation of two characters. <A Lucy Day - Wife's Present> is the play text of authentic drama with the dialogue as a main expressive medium magnifying the personality of characters and the relationship among characters. This play begins with the writer's imagination and interpretation that Kim Chumji's windfall has been conspired by his wife. The biggest change is the narrative focus on ‘his wife' who plays a supportive role in original novel. In other words, the relationship between Kim Chumji and his wife, which is fragmentarily described, is specified and intensified in newly added episodes of rickshaw journey on the part of wife. ‘His wife' makes a new narration and thematically becomes much more closer to ‘love between a married couple and its significance' rather than ‘life irony' and ‘poverty of the people' by focusing on the relationship between Kim Chumji and his wife. The study on three play texts based on the novel <A Lucky Day> not only can cause a variety of discussions on the original novel but also can be applied from a novel to a play as a data for question on the adaptation methods and for seeking specific solution.
