AB - 본고는 『만선일보』, 『매일신보』, 『동아일보』 등과 같은 기본 자료를 바탕으로 전시총동원체제로 치닫던 일제 말기 조선 극단의 만주 순회공연을 재구성하고자 했다. 일제 말기 조선의 극단들은 적어도 1940년까지는 북선(北鮮)지역을 비롯하여 만주에서도 극단의 생존을 영위하기 위해 주로 영리 목적의 공연을 했다. 그러다 1940년 말 ‘조선연극협회’가 결성된 후, 그들은 만주의 관객들에게도 ‘연극보국’을 위한 공연을 하게 되었다. 하지만 그것만으로는 극단의 생존이 위태로웠기에 영리 목적의 공연도 유지하지 않을 수 없었다. 즉 일제 말기 조선의 극단들은 외적, 내적으로 이중의 책임을 걸머지고 만주를 순연해야 했다. 이는 곧 일제 말기 조선의 극단들이 마주해야 했던 현실이었다. 일제 말기 조선의 극단은 이동의 편리와 극장을 고려하여 주로 만주의 대도시와 그 주변 지역을 중심으로 활동했다. 당시 ‘만주국’의 기관지 역할을 했던 『만선일보』는 만주를 순연하는 조선의 극단들을 적극적으로 후원한 반면, 그들의 공연 내용을 심사함으로써 당국의 검열에 대한 적극적인 협력을 보여주었다. 만주에서의 조선 극단의 공연에 대한 통제는 1940년 3월, ‘만주연예협회’의 탄생 및 1941년 ‘만주국’의 관제개혁과 더불어 강화되기 시작했다. 공연 방식과 내용은 물론, 조선 극단에 대한 효율적인 관리에 이르기까지 ‘만주연예협회’가 개입한 흔적이 역력했다. 이에 따라 일제 말기 만주를 순연했던 조선의 극단들이 조선과 만주의 이중적인 통제를 감당해야 했음을 추론할 수 있었다. 일제 말기 조선 극단들의 만주 순연은 문화적으로 소외되었던 재만 조선인들에게 문화적 정체성, 나아가 민족적 정체성을 확인시켜주었다는 점에서, 그리고 재만 조선인 극단의 형성과 발전에 일정한 영향을 미쳤다는 점에서 아주 긍정적인 의의를 지닌다. 그러나 만주라는 특수한 지역의 관객성을 고려하지 않은 채 맹목적으로 국책선전을 시도함으로써 관객들의 외면을 당했다는 점에서 부정적인 평가를 면할 수 없었다.
