ABSTRACT

The primary purpose of this paper first is an overview of the discography of the SP record drama which was published during 1920-30’s. For this purpose, this paper made up the SP record lists, checked the left lyrics and the sound source, and searched the names of the actors, writers, directors, etc. who participated in the record work. Also it investigated how the SP record drama, the popular narrative, the popular songs were interacting each other in the sphere of the popular culture. Therefore, The study of the SP record drama is very important for the study of the popular culture. The SP record was such a commodity that could not help considering the popular trends. There were so many ‘classic/traditional’ repertories as traditional novel or Pansori like Chunhyangjeon(春香傳), shimchungchen(沈靑傳), and etc., the famous Shinpakuk(新派劇, New Trend Drama) as like Changhanmong(長恨夢), Bulyugyu(不如歸), and the western classics –like The Resurrecton(by Tolstoy), Les Misérable(by Hugo), and etc. However, the most of the SP record drama was the new original works. The motifs and main characters of the SP record drama could be easily found in stage drama, movie, novel, and popular songs. And the famous and popular actors, singers, silent-film narrators were employed in the record recoding. Also the representative works of 1930’s such as Fooled by love, Hurt by Money(by Im Sungyu), The Power of Mother(by Lee Suhgyu), and even the works of Yu Chijin were sharing the motifs, main characters, and narrative with the SP record drama and the popular narratives.
