ABSTRACT
This article analyzes the music drama “Ogok taryeong” made by Oh Youngjin in comparison with his contemporary Yu Ch’ijin’s “Ch’eoyong ga” in order to position Oh Youngjin in the history of music drama in Korea. Oh’s works reveals conditions of music drama when it started in the beginning, and has since evolved in Korea. This article concludes that his drama reflects the ambiguous character in Korean musical, which has long been straddled between politics and art, and between elite and popular cultures.
