ABSTRACT

The purpose of this essay is to find out exactly Yuchijin’s process to enter the theatrical world through the time of study in Japan. He said that he was shocked at the Great Kantō earthquake, which made him realize the need of drama and since then he had played continuously as a kind of enlightening popular movement. The researchers studying him tended to accept his saying. However, Dongrang’s autobiographyis the material which is low in being trustworthy and comparing his assertion and his activity in studying in Japan, the difference would be found. That’s why we need to reexamine it in a whole way. In 1923, when the Great Tokyo Earthquake happened, Yuchijin was a sophomore of Buzan junior high school. It seemed that this earthquake gave him the fear of death more strongly. So he tried to overcome the fear through the activity of Toseonghoe, the literary coterie group of Tongyeong. It was from 1926 when he entered the Rikkyo University that he was awoken to drama. Chohakju changed Toseonghoe into a social group and because of him Yuchijin could meet the Anarcho-syndicalisme, which was the opportunity for him. He come to know the value of People's Theatre by means of The People's Theatre translated by Osugi Sakae, the representative of Japanese Anarcho-syndicalisme, Iida toyaji’s anarchic drama and the road show of Toseonghoe, a social group. But Yuchijin didn’t take part in the play of Anarcho-syndicalisme in person. It was very difficult for him to participate in the movement of Anarcho-syndicalisme together, because he fell into Nihilism at that time. When he was a sophomore of university, he met an Irish dramatist, Seán O'Casey’s works and he found the possibility of People's Theatre. He combined Seán O'Casey’s techniques of playwriting and Osugi Sakae’s theory of art for people and laid the foundation of theatrical theory on the basis of interest, instruction and popularity.
