ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to analyze formal characteristics and ideological elements of the drama <Huge Tower of Fantasy>. This drama is adapted from a Web toon, <Fantasy City>. <Huge Tower of Fantasy> is a drama of omnibus form, and uses peripety as a plot device. Listing ways of the omnibus episodes and 20 minute amount of each episode intended to pursue commercial interests. Because <Huge Tower of Fantasy> is too short, this drama dose not induce to introspection but to surprise. This drama shows the fantastic situation that is caused by contact between humans and machines. At the same time, this makes the boundaries of humans and inhuman dim, functioning as a satire and criticism on modern civilization. However characters who lost their humanity by the machine is showing humanism of punitive justice by being punished in ending scene. Characters of <Huge Tower of Fantasy> entered the world of fantasy through surreal situations or contacting with the machine. Protagonists should receive ethical punishment because of their excessive desire. It shows the ideology of humanism that separates human from inhuman strictly. The text violates its logic unconsciously by breaking down the border between humans and inhuman. It means that <Huge Tower of Fantasy> handles the ‘affect’ of anxiety/precariousness as ideologeme of text. Anxiety and precariousness represent the ‘affect’ of people who lose their future prospects under the system of Neo-liberalism. But the drama sutures the ‘affect’ of anxiety and precariousness through humanistic punitive justice.
