The Database and annotation of television historical drama in Korea : 1964~2014

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research is to make lists of historical television drama in Korea from 1964 to 2014. In spite of the socio-cultural value, its database has been insufficiently provided. This research suggested the lists of 318 historical television dramas, depending on type, form, time background, narrative, authors and producers so on). Concerning the time background, Chosun Dynasty is 241(75.8%), as the first, ancient times from Gochosun to three nations period is 23(7.3%), and Japanese colonial era to Korean War is 22(6.9%) so on. Historical dramas set on ancient times tend to be increased after 2000s. Television dramas narrative is concerned with historical figure-oriented(more than 30%), historical melodrama is followed as 22%, and social context-oriented(12.9%). In the case of historical drama form, weekday serials dominantly appeared in 1960s, daily serials in the 1970s, weekday and weekend serials(two times a week) after the 1980s. It was in the 1970s that historical dramas were produced the most. However, the number of historical drama production has been increased since the 2000s. With regard to protagonists, Lee Seonggye, the first king of Chosun Dynasty appeared at 7 times at the first.
