ABSTRACT

This paper examines director Hur Gyu’s consciousness as reflected the dramaturgy of Changgeuk Kwangdaega (Clown song) and Buma-sarang (Love of a King’s son-in-law). Hur Gyu practiced nationalist theatre for a long time. This paper researches the meaning of Korean style dramaturgy, and the way these two productions embodied a unique Changgeuk dramaturgy based on Hur Gyu’s approach to direction. The study found that the dramaturgy of creative Changgeuk was a collection of various kinds of Korean traditional performing arts for on-stage dramatic expression, based on the Pansori realization of the “coexistence of cross-cultures”, the “awareness of equality”, and “love”. Hur Gyu, who is often called “the pioneer of Changgeuk”, created dramaturgy for creative Changgeuk based on personal method that, distinguished it from his Whanpan-Changgeuk based on the Pansori repertory. Therefore, this article suggests that Hur Gyu contributed to the development of the dramaturgy of creative Changgeuk by expanding it spatial expression through an integrated method.
