Current Status of Culture Contents Research and Interface with Drama Studies

ABSTRACT

The Concept of ‘Culture Contents’ was made in mid-1990s, so-called ‘the period of culture’ when the culture was regarded as the important subject of national policy project, and have used widely in various fields. This study tries to address the current status of culture contents research that appeared in 21th century in Korea, and aims to consider the application aspect generated in the field of drama. Culture Contents Research so far is divided into three groups. Activation of culture industry, education of culture contents, and criticism of artistic value about culture contents are the types of the research. As a result of the analysis, those groups have the matter that they are separated discretely and don't pursue the integrated research. Especially though the field of drama has activated the concept of ‘Storytelling’ that indicates the core creative skill and strategy of culture contents, there are few attempts to seek the interface with culture contents because of the accumulation of inherent research. But drama after digital technology identifies and extends its meaning by the characteristics of ‘Convergence’ or ‘Trans-’. So the approach through Culture Contents is needed for interpretation of the new drama that consists of new format. This study recognizes the inevitable transition of trend from ‘Culture’ to ‘Culture Contents’ in Korea, but also suggests the critical attitude about the industrial and commercial aspect of Culture Contents. Even if past twenty years were dedicated to verifying the power of culture that generates the high value of our society, next step should be dedicated to critical introspection that leads the age to achieve the new value and meaning.
