AB - 『식민지조선 근대극의 형성』은 그간 근대극의 과도기로 치부되는 데 그쳤던 1920년대의 연극사를 본격적으로 재조명한 저작이다. 크게 다섯 마당으로 구성된 이 책은 식민지조선 근대극담당자의 인식과 자연주의극 수용의 문제, ‘입센이즘’의 수용 양상을 밝히고 있으며, 극예술협회, 카프계열 극단, 토월회의 활동을 중심으로 하는 연극사적 흐름 역시 중요한 검토대상으로 삼았다. 김재석은 식민지조선의 근대극 활동 중에 서양 근대극 수준에 이른 것이 있는가를 묻는 질문이 바람직하지 않으며, 보다 생산적인 논의로 나아가기 위해서는 “넘치거나 모자라는 것들”에 주목해야 한다고 제안한다. 그리고 이는 실재태로서의 한국 근대극이 지닌 독자성을 규명하기 위한 방법론적 전환을 의미하는 것이기도 하다. 한편, 검열은 식민지조선 근대극의 실천을 제약한 요소였지만, 이는 역으로 식민지기 한국 연극의 독특한 면모를 발생시킨 원인이 되었다. 김재석은 “자발성 높은 관객”의 존재에 착목하여 ‘계몽의 극장’이 완성되는 과정을 재구성한다. 즉, “관객이 단순한 소비자에 머물지 않고 극의 의미 생성에 일정 부분을 담당하는 독특함이 바로 식민지조선 근대극의 특성”이며, 이를 전제할 때 비로소 “넘치거나 모자라는 요소”가 형성해내는 효과를 온전히 이해할 수 있게 된다는 것이다. 김재석은 ‘비교연극학’의 방법론을 적용하여 그간 자료의 공백 때문에 충분히 논의되지 못했던 1920년대 연극사를 보다 구체적으로 조명하는 데 성공했다. 그리고 이는 1930년대의 연극사적 현상들에 뚜렷한 역사적 연속성을 부여할 수 있는 계기를 제공한다는 점, 침체되어 가는 식민지기 연극 연구에 돌파구를 마련하고 있다는 점에서 소중한 성과로 평가되어야 한다.
