AB - 본고는 새로 발굴된 동랑 유치진의 일본어 평론 「조선의 신극운동－토월회의 해체와 극단 신흥극장의 성립」(1931)을 중심으로 유치진의 초기 연극관과 신흥극장의 활동 양상에 대하여 을 정리한 것이다. 지금까지 유치진의 비평 활동은 「연극영화전을 개최하면서」로 시작되었다는 것이 정설이었지만, 그는 이에 앞서 한국 신극운동에 관한 글을 일본어로 발표하였다. 「조선의 신극운동」에서 유치진은 연극 전통과 대중화 문제에 대한 관심, 일제의 식민지 지배에 대한 입장 등 그의 초기 연극관을 제시하였다. 이 외에도 극단 신흥극장의 설립 선언문과 제2회 공연 예정 작품에 대하여 언급하는데 이것은 홍해성의 연극관을 보여주는 귀중한 자료라 할 수 있다.
