AB - 박선영의 『코미디언 전성시대: 한국 코미디영화의 역사와 정치미학』(2018)은 연구주제의 다양성과, 연구대상에 대한 객관적이면서 꼼꼼한 분석이 돋보이는 윤리적인 연구서이다. 박사논문 「한국 코미디영화 형성과정 연구」(2011)에서부터 일관되게 지속되어 온 저자의 문제의식은 멜로드라마와 함께 장르 분화와 형성의 최전선에 있던 1950년대 한국 코미디영화의 위상에 대한 재고의 필요성이다. 박사논문 이후 박선영의 연구들이 주목하고 있는 ‘엎치락뒤치락’ 코미디들과 코미디언들에 대한 조명은 그간 한국영화사 기술에서 소외되어왔던 ‘저급’한 코미디와 코미디언들에 대한 일종의 구제비평의 실천적 연구로서 코미디 이론과 한국 영화학계의 성좌에 새로운 별을 추가한다.
저자의 박사논문을 다듬고 보완한 제1부 한국 코미디영화의 형성과 역사성에서는 1950년대 코미디영화를 한국 코미디영화의 장르 형성기로 보고, 문화, 산업, 매체의 측면에서 코미디영화와 사회적인 맥락의 연관관계를 살핀다. 2장과 3장에서는 한국적 ‘희극성’에 대한 범매체적 통찰을 통해 초기 장르 형성의 역사적 컨텍스트를 살피는데, 특히 저자는 한국 코미디 영화가 한국에 장르로서 정착하기 이전의 엔터테인먼트였던 재담, 외화 수용, 버라이어티 쇼를 통해 1950년대 이전과 50년대의 대중문화/연예장의 지형도를 살펴본다.
제 2부는 공저와 소논문으로 발표된 다양한 글들로 이루어져있다. 2부의 1, 2장은 이 책의 주요 초점인 1950년대로부터 잠시 플래시백을 취하며 시작하는데, 이들 장에서는 근대 코미디 외화 상영의 실천과 이로 인한 근대적 ‘웃음의 감각’ 형성과정 – 재담과 같은 청각적 감각에서 슬랩스틱 코미디와 같은 시각적인 감각으로의 전이를 알아볼 수 있다. 서영춘과 불온함, 그리고 백금녀와 여성코미디의 제문제를 다룬 4장과 5장은 앞선 챕터들을 토대로, 향후 다양한 사례연구의 가능성을 보여준다.
