ABSTRACT

Um Inhee is a writer who has worked both in official theater system and progressive theater camp outside the system. She made her official debut in 1981, and worked as a writer in Gonggan Sarang(the Space Theater). Gonggan Sarang was the center of the experimental theater which modernized the traditional theater. At this time, what she was particularly interested in was puppet puppetry. However, She left the official theater system after the year of 5.18 in Gwangju in 1980 and actively participated in the worker's cultural movement. 1985 until 1995, for ten years, she worked as a labor theater writer and director in the Anyang factory area centered on the Keun Him(Great Power) of the labor theater company and the Sae Him(New power) of the worker's theater group. The worker-centered classist perspective is an important core of the her work world. This period is also a time when her feminist view is embodied. The main figures of her early works are male characters such as Babo Eolsu(Idiot eolsu), Hongbacgga(Red and white face man), Nogdujanggun(General Nogdu). However, at this time, the characters are female characters, such as Sobagi, housewives, mothers, female teachers, female middle school students. In conclusion, the characteristics of her work world can be summarized as the theatricality of the traditional drama, the class view, and the feminist viewpoint. This direction goes to feminist theater after Geu Yeoaui Soseol(Her story) in 1995.
