AB - 『조선 대중극의 용광로 동양극장』은 1935년 7월 설립되어 1945년까지 전속극단 체제로 운영되었던 동양극장의 활동을 극단 운영 시스템과 공연활동, 직업연극인의 계보를 중심으로 분석한 연구서이다. 본고에서는 ‘시스템’과 ‘계보’(인맥)을 이 책의 키워드로 보고 분석을 시도하였다. 동양극장은 1936년 개관 이후 대관운영과 순회공연, 영화제작 및 기타 부대사업 등 극단의 경제적 이익을 극대화하기 위한 흥행 체제와 대본공급, 연습, 연기, 무대미술 등 대중적 공연활동을 연속키 위한 연기‧창작‧공연 체제를 중심으로 한 ‘시스템’을 구축하였고, 이는 1939년 사주 교체와 극단원 이탈 이후로도 동양극장이 운영될 수 있는 기반을 마련하였다. 책에서 분석한 동양극장의 ‘시스템’은 1920년대 직업극단의 노하우가 총합되어 있는 1930년대 대중극단의 성취로, 배우와 공연 중심의 연극사에서 벗어나 극단의 운영 시스템으로부터 한국 근대연극의 전개과정을 살피는 새로운 시각을 제공한다. 또한 이 책에서는 1920년대 ‘토월회 인맥’과 ‘취성좌 인맥’으로 분류되는 ‘계보’가 1930년대 중반 동양극장의 청춘좌와 호화선으로 총합되는 과정을 분석하였다. 청춘좌와 호화선 두 단체는 무대장치나 인력, 배우, 각본은 넘나드는 사이였지만, 연출과 작가진 등 일정한 작업그룹을 형성하면서 경쟁적 관계를 이루었다. 특히 이 책에서는 저간 주목받지 않았던 호화선의 활동이나 1939년 이후 동양극장의 인적구성 등을 세밀하게 연구하며 동양극장의 면모를 새롭게 밝혀 1930년대 극단사 연구로서 앞선 성과를 이루어내었다
