ABSTRACT

This thesis deals with Resurrection of the Little Match Girl (2002) in the view of the open film theory presented by Jang Sunwoo in the 1980’s. According to this theory, contrasted to the consumptive film which asks subordinate relation between object and audience, the open film asks the audience involve in the film relating objects and audience horizontally and aims at changing people and society. In Resurrection of the Little Match Girl many techniques of the open film are used such as multiple endings, addressing to the spectators through subtitles, referring to many films such as Leon, Matrix, True Romance, etc. In addition, spectators are asked to participate in the film, distinguishing actual reality from virtual reality. Then what is the purpose of these techniques of the open film? It is related with the existence of the ´system´ in this film: ´System´ is omnipresent in actual reality, virtual reality and the 3rd world, in which people adapt themselves to the violence of the ´system´ and experience human isolation. Through this, this film gives warning against the system and human isolation, which appeared in the Director Jang’s actual debut film, the Age of Success. So we can say that the theme of warning against system and human isolation is repeated in Jang’s films, along with the techniques of the open film.
