ABSTRACT

This article discussed the cultural origin of Chwiseongjwa’s Gageuk that as a style of popular drama. First, Chwiseongjw’s Gageuk play list were compared with Takarazuka’s it, and it was confirmed that the lists of the two groups were similar. Epecially, “<Wolgwanggok>”(1929) was the only piece of Chwiseongjwa’ works that could be compared to Takarazuka’s work. Comparing those two works, it was confirmed that Chwiseongjwa’s “Wolgwanggok” was modeled after Tatsuya Kishida’s dance play “<Wolgwanggok>”(1920) performed by Takarazuka. It indicates that Chwiseongjwa was influenced by Takarazuka. However, after the film <Mon Paris>(1927) was released in 1929, as western dance was strengthened the difference between the ‘Gageuk’ and the ‘Revue’ ware disappear. It shows that the Chwiseongjwa’s Gageuk had been the product of a complex culture completed through ‘Revue of France’, ‘Vaudeville of American’ and ‘Variety of Tenkats’ including Takarazuka.
