AB - 9명의 저자가 참여하고 한국영상자료원이 엮은 『1980년대 한국영화: ‘서울의 봄’부터 코리안 뉴웨이브까지』는 1980년대 한국/영화를 익숙한 듯 신선한 방식으로 기억한다. 1980년대 한국영화 정책과 산업 그리고 작품과 영화인 등을 개괄하기 위해 기획된 이 책은 전체 3부로 구성된다. 1부는 1980년대 한국/영화를 기억하는 시네필과 영화운동가의 이야기를, 2부는 총론에 이어 장르와 미학, 배우, 독립영화 그리고 영화문화 등을 다룬다. 3부는 제작 현장에 종사하는 30명의 구술 증언을 바탕으로 1980년대 영화산업을 재구성한다. 부록으로 ‘1980년대 극장 풍경’ 화보와 ‘1980년대 영화산업 주요 통계’를 포함하여 대중 독자부터 영화사 연구자까지 모두에게 도움을 주는 자료집 성격도 갖췄다.
이 책은 다음의 몇 가지를 이유로 흥미롭다. 먼저, 흔히 알고 있을 것으로 생각하는 역사적 사실을 상세히 기술하면서 독자들이 향후 풀어야 할 과제를 탐색하도록 만든다. 다음, 영화 텍스트에 국한된 기존의 역사 서술 방식을 벗어나서 1980년대 새로운 영화와 영화문화를 만들 수밖에/만들 수 있게 된 역사의 현장을 저자 각자의 시선에서 반복해서 보여준다. 따라서 1부 회고를 통해서 기억된 1980년대 영화적 사건들에 관한 이야기들이 이 책 전체를 관통하면서 이야기를 덧붙이며 확장한다. 무엇보다도 ‘한국영상자료원만이 낼 수 있는 1980년대 한국/영화에 관한 책’이라는 자부심이 느껴질 정도로 포괄적인 주제를 다룬다. 하지만 1980년대 한국/영화와 함께 있었던 관객에 대한 배려가 상대적으로 부족한 점은 아쉬움으로 남는다.
