AB - 한 권의 배리어컨셔스(barrier conscious) 공연 비평서가 도착했다. 『보란듯한 몸, 초과되는 말들: 배리어컨셔스 공연』(책공장 이안재, 2023)은 한국문학 전공자이자 공연예술 비평가로 활동을 시작한 저자가 <참여 워크숍-없는 사람>(제로셋 프로젝트, 2018) 부터 <내 얘기 좀 들어봐3>(극단 북새통×플랜큐, 2023)에 이르기까지 2020년대 전후 배리어프리를 지향하는 공연들을 만나며, 그리고 “장애를 공부”하며 남긴 흔적들을 모은 책이다. 2000년대 초반부터 장애인 연극 집단이 활성화되고 2020년을 전후로 장애예술제도 및 정책이 확충되며 장애연극/배리어프리/배리어컨셔스 공연이 활성화되고 있는 상황에서 저자는 단순한 미달 혹은 정치적 의도의 전시가 아닌 연극의 규범화된 질서와 근대성의 몸과 시간 규약과 관련한 “동일성의 지옥”을 성찰하게 하는 마중물로서 이 공연들의 풍부한 목소리에 조응하는 비평적 글쓰기를 선보였다.
매체에 따라 형상화되는 장애의 유형이 상이할 수 있는데, 신체의 이동과 점유를 통해 가능해지는 현존의 예술로서 공연은 누가 그리고 어떻게 무대에 설 수 있으며 극장에 올 수 있는가의 비장애중심주의와 문화라는 질문을 첨예화시킬 수 있는 장르이다. 무대에 요구되던 ‘으레’의 것은 무엇이 있으며, 장애연극/배리어프리/배리어컨셔스 연극은 어떻게 이 ‘으레’와 불화하는가. 저자는 1장에서 무대에 오를 수 있는 몸들과 시선의 권력을 문제시하고 2장에서는 저자가 마주친 공연들이 무대의 미학성을 결정하는 공연예술의 구성요소를 새롭게 재구축하는지 극장, 대사, 시선의 관습의 차원으로 나누어 구체적으로 분석한다.
‘유보’와 ‘지연’, ‘차연’로 제시된 저자의 글쓰기 태도, 기존 공연의 독법에서 비껴 나가지만 자신에게 분명한 마주쳐진 정동적 실체를 설명하기 위한 언어를 찾는 머뭇거림의 글쓰기가 더욱 큰 길을 만들기 시작한 장애연극/배리어프리/배리어컨셔스 공연의 미래와 조응한다. 이 해체의 글쓰기는 지적인 유희와 우월성의 재구축을, 문화적 소외층을 배리어프리 하게 해 주는 시혜적인 글쓰기를 목적으로 하지 않는다. 장애에 대한 사유와 배리어컨셔스 공연을 통해 더 나은 이해와 체득의 순간으로 넘어가게 된 한 비평가/기록자가 도달한 정직한 글쓰기의 지평을 보여주기 때문이다.
