ABSTRACT

This study is to investigate the physical and bibliographical characteristics of the Buddhist scriptures founded in the Palsangjon at the Bulgapsa, Yeonggwang In particular, the study analyzes in the four aspects such as: 1) the origin and development of Bulgapsa; 2) the history of Palsangjon and the investigation of materials found in the Palsangjon; 3) the physical and bibliographical characteristics of the Buddhist scriptures; 4) the value of a newly-founded books. The Buddhist scriptures found in the Palsangjon consist of 60 kinds of books. These books were published at Gosan, Suncheon, Gwangju, Damyang, Naju, and Sunchang in Jeonra province and Gyeongsang province and were sent to the Bulgapsa to perform the Buddhist rites. Their publication periods ranged from the 4th year of Woowang’s reign(1378) to the 41st year of Sunjo’s reign(1608). The subjects of these books are Sacred books, Zen Buddhism, Buddhist rites. As for the Sacred books, Neungomgyeong, Cheonro-gumganggyeong, and Wolinsokbo vol. 23 reprint are the most imporant books. Among the Zen Buddhism, Bopjip-beolhangrok-beongip-saki the Kyoro edition 1vol. and Baekwunhwasang-buljo-jikji-simcheyeojol wood block print are also rare books. In the subject of Buddhist rites, these books are not the peculiar characteristics, but have its own value according to the edition compared with other books which were published in the 17th and 18th century. It is approved that these sacred books newly founded in the Palsangjon at Bulgapsa have the various and peculiar characteristics and the value of cultural properties as a national treasure. These books are the important collection in comparison with the other collection. The results of this study will be contributed for research the Buddhist scriptures in the fields of bibliographical science, Korean studies, and Buddhist sciences, and others.
