ABSTRACT

This research discusses the current issues and controversial topics on the production of <Chojo-Taejanggyong(初雕大藏經)> published in the Koryo Dynasty, analyzes their contents, contexts, and physical characteristics, using the subject bibliographical approach, and also suggests the future directions of research. These topics have been identified while conducting the project of building a database of <Chojo-Taejanggyong> of which the Research Institute of Tripitaka Koreana is in charge. Major findings are as follows:First, it is confirmed that the purpose of producing <Chojo-Taejanggyong> was to enhance Buddhism and protect the country from the invasion of the Kitan during the Koryo Dynasty. Also examined are the current issues which should be discussed and addressed through the long-term research in this projectSecond, it is suggested that the issues such as ① the process of engraving and producing <Chojo-Taejanggyong>, ② the relationship between the different editions and versions, that is, ‘Kukjeong-bon’ and ‘Kukhu-bon’, ③ the differences in the number of volumes and the order of tables of contents of <Chojo- Taejanggyong> and <Chaejo-Taejanggyong(再雕大藏經)>, ④ the restoration of the bibliography of <Chojo-Taejanggyong> and ⑤ the variances in illustrations accompanied in different editions should be all systematically investigated and discussed. Also some topics to be further researched and resolved during this project have also been identified.A thorough examination of different editions and versions of <Chojo- Taejangyong> leads to the need for restoring <Chojo-TaejangMongnok(初雕大藏目錄)> which is the bibliography of <Chojo-Taejangyong>, based on the more detailed analysis of the contents and volumes of each scripture, and further delving into the above mentioned issues.
