ABSTRACT

Through this study, the examination and comparative analysis of records of successful applicants from Nakahan Oh clan that passed Yeogkwa was conducted and the characteristics of lineage of applicants successful in Yeogkwa from Nakahn Oh clan was reviewed. The results of this study is as follows. 1) Nakahn Oh clan is in the 24th place in total 219 clans from which there were successful applicants for state examination for the selection of official interpreters (Yeogkwan). This Oh clan is a hereditary lineage of interpreters from which total 37 passed Yeogkwa. 2) According to the clan genealogy and Yeogkwa Bangmok, the founder of new JungChuKong sub-lineage is Jeong-hyun Oh. His descendants have formed a family of official interpreters while having passed Yeogkwa for 8 consecutive generations.3) As a result of the review on the records relating to the successful applicants from Nakahn Oh clan that passed in Yeogkwa, it was found out that this clan is a lineage of family that achieved status elevation in late Chosun times. Some of their ancestors were successful as interpreters even without passing Yeogkwa. 4) Although Yeogkwa Bos show some inconsistency between themselves in terms of the overall structure and the number of successful applicants, the record of those who passed Yeonkwa from Nakahn Oh clan matches each other, except that Nakahn Oh clan records covers 1837-1880, which is not the case with different clans. 5) The clan genealogy, Yeogkwa Bo, Yeogkwa Bangmok and Yeogkwa Yujip shows difference in terms of structure and content of the records, especially the records of some official positions, previous names, revised names, and nicknames (ja 字). Meanwhile, records of successful applicants from Nakahn Oh clan in Yeogkwa supplements each other and the record of Yeogkwa Bongmok is relatively detailed.
