AB - This research reviews , the book about the method of casting movable types from porcelain clay, and tests the possibility of reproducing Heungdoksa-ja (興德寺字; metal movable types of ) with this method, by following the procedures and practices as described in this book. Results from this research are as follows:First, from , the items about the casting of movable types were analyzed to figure out the method and process of actually casting movable types from porcelain clay.Second, seven steps of this method were defined, and the procedure and meanings of each step were analyzed. It was found that some major technical know-hows and requirements needed to follow in producing metal movable types were deliberately omitted in this book.Third, from the experiment, it was found that porcelain clay plates should be resistant to cracks, fire, and crumbles, be strong, and ventilate well enough to form the mold. To meet these requirements, the proportion of ocher powder, powder of mudstone, and fine sands should be 3: 5: 2, respectively.Fourth, it was revealed that to be able to cast metal movable types, both the molds of an internal frame and an external frame with the same material should be prepared. Also, found is that without sufficient pressures from the melt metals (caused by their weight and volumes) left on the upper part of the mold, it was not possible to cast the perfect form of metal movable types.Fifth, to cast metal movable types, a hexahedral mold for the shape of each character should be formed before pouring melt metals into the mold, and other components such as 'kajisoe' and passage and should also be prepared at this stage. It was confirmed that by following these steps, Heungdoksa-ja (metal movable types of ) could be reproduced with the method of casting metal movable types from porcelain clay.
