ABSTRACT

In this study, a literature-based research was conducted to restore the method of casting movable metal types from wax. This specific method of casting movable metal types from wax has never been discussed before, and in this study, was first brought attention to the academic community in Korea. It is assumed that this method could be used for restoring movable metal types.1) This study examined the detailed principles and procedures of wax casting method.2) The main material for a matrix was yellow beeswax, and the supporting materials included pine resin, animal fat, and vegetable oil. The mixture ratio differed depending on various factors such as size, shape of the casting and temperature.3) The main materials for a mould were yellow earth and clay. Various materials were used as supporting materials such as paper, lime, sand, rice straw ashes, rice bran, feathers. horse dung, hemp, hairs of ox, plant powder, charcoal powder, graphite, soot, coal ash powder, and salt.4) The metal components were mainly characterized by brass alloy, and elements of tin, lead, and iron were also added.
