ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to analyze the Chipyungyoram published in the reign of King Sejong in the Joseon Period. The procedure of its compilation and publication, the structure and organization, and the method and characteristics of its description are analyzed. The findings are as follows:1. With the firm intention of publishing the Chipyungyoram, King Sejong ordered Jeong Inji, who was the Jijungchuwonsa, to compile the book in 1441. The Chipyungyoram composed of 150 volumes was completed 5 years later in 1446. The Chipyungyoram mainly contains the cases which could be set an example to kings, and teach the common people the lesson to encourage their good conduct, selected from Chinese and Korean history 2. The reason why King Sejong wanted to compile this vast volumes of the Chipyungyoram was to learn how to govern the country well through history and pass the lesson to the descendants.3. The Chipyungyoram was not published shortly after compilation, but proofread by Yi Keuggi in the reign of King Jungjong, and finally printed in the reign of King Sejo. 4. The purpose of compiling the Chipyungyoram was to encourage Confucian values. Therefore, the Chipyungyoram did not have any limit on what to include, and tried to keep the objectivity in writing. 5. The Chipyungyoram quoted 117 books, especially history books written in the times of the Song Dynasty and moral books based on Sung Confucianism. It evidences that King Sejong had regarded Confucianism and Sung Confucianism as the principle of his government.
