ABSTRACT

In this study, analyzed are the contents described on the byunsangwha of the scripts of Saddharmapundarika sutra and Avatamsaka-sutra which were considered to be two great important sutras by zen-buddhism as well as no-zen-buddhism in Korean mahayana-buddhism.Since any full set of Avatamsaka-sutra was not found yet, the content analysis was limited to whatever currently available. However, with this limitation, in this study, an attempt is made to figure out the characteristics of byunsangwha by examining the pums which accompanied those byunsangwha for Avatamsaka-sutra Avatamsaka-sutra is different from other sutras, in that the interpretations of each bodhisattva, that is a preacher, regarding Buddha are the main focus, and therefore, each pum (chapter of sutra) has different preachers. On a name plate in front of byunsangwha, preachers and audiences are identified, and the core content of the appropriate pum are detailed. Sometimes, there were so much content that even byunsangwha was omitted, and only name plates were used to describe the main content. That is why it is rather easy to analyze the content of script of Avatamsaka-sutra. In order to figure out the most important creed in each volume of Avatamsaka-sutra, the content analysis of byunsangwha whenver found should be done.In the case of other sutras, preaching content was also described on every script. While sometimes the whole creed were simply described on a scene, some content of sutras were too difficult to analyze. However, more effort was made to analyze such difficult cases, and further study is also required to understand them better.
