AB - The purpose of this study is to analyze physical and textual characteristics of Gogeum-Myeongyu(古今名喩). The major findings are as follows: (1) Gogeum-Myeongyu was compiled by O-Sagi(吳仕期) who collected the maxims and wise sayings since the ancient Chinese history to Ming Dynasty. It was written in 1573 and first published in 1577. (2) In Korea, three copies of Gogeum-Myeongyu are currently held at the National Library of Korea, and there are, respectively, one copy at Gyujang-gak, and three copies at Jongyeong-gak. Although some variances are found in the bibliographic descriptions of those various copies, they all seem to be the same edition. (3) An analysis of three copies of Gogeum-Myeongyu held at the National Library of Korea reveals that they were printed with movable types different from wooden movable types or metal movable types. (4) It is speculated that Gogeum-Myeongyu was printed with movable soil- types during the reign of King Yeongjo.
