ABSTRACT

Euiokjib(疑獄集) was compiled by Hwa Ung in the Five Dynasties Period in China(五代) and supplemented by his son Hwa Mong. This book first included 29 criminal cases since the Han Dynasty, but later it was revised and complemented by other people so that its content and structure became gradually changed. It is not known when Euiokjib was first imported into Korea, but it was published in the first year of King Munjong's reign(1059) in the Goryeo Period, and later in the 18th year of King Taejong's reign(1418) and the 14th year of King Ssongjong's reign(1487) in the Joseon Period. It means that this books was considered important in governing the nation. East Asian Library at the University of California at Berkeley currently holds a volume with three chapters of Euiokjib published in the early Joseon Period. It was printed with woodblocks first carved in 1418. This edition of Euiokjib, while published in the later period, is still the oldest existing copy, and shows such valuable characteristics as follows: First, an original preface by Hwa Ung still remains only in this book. Second, the original titles of criminal cases included in the book can be confirmed. Third, the original 29 cases included in the first edition and the cases omitted in the later period can be identified. Fourth, this particular edition shows the best and complete text without wrong words or errors. Fifth, this book was printed with woodblocks carved on the edition published in 1059 in the Goryeo Period. Sixth, this edition carved in 1418 could include a version complemented in the later period, but not the original version.
