ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research is to classify various ornamental notepapers largely used in the Joseon Period, according to their physical features and analyze their characteristics by period. Those ornamental notepapers classified into four types generally exhibited the following characteristics:1) Full-patterned ornamental notepapers(全面紋型) had appeared before the 15th century, but still used in the early 1600s. This type of notepapers, only rarely found in these days, were typical in the 15th and 16th centuries. On the entire surface of a paper, patterns such as hills and streams or people were placed, and the outlines and colors of lines were not much clear. 2) Bamboo-patterned ornamental notepapers(竹冊紋型) had appeared since the early to mid-1500s. The basic patterns of this type of notepapers look like connected bamboo pieces, and many of them have various other patterns and short phrases with the pattern of bamboo pieces on the right side of a paper. They were used for almost 150 years till the mid- and late 17th century.3) Right-side-patterned ornamental notepapers(始面紋型) were known to be used in the mid-1600s, but most popular since the late 1600s through the late 1700s. This type of notepapers have rather simple patterns or phrases without the pattern of bamboo pieces on the right side of a paper.4) Small-letter-type ornamental papers(短札紋型) became popular in the 1800s. They were normally as small as two postcards, and their size, much smaller than those of papers as earlier used, became standardized. This type of papers were naturally used until the early 1900s.
