ABSTRACT

This research reports the result from the pilot experiment conducted to restore Imjin-Ja movable types. The major findings are as follows:First, the casting of Imjin-Ja(壬辰字) is described in the second chapter. Second, in the third chapter, ‘Hangul Metal Movable Types with Musin-Ja(戊申字)’ which are currently held at the National Central Museum of Korea, are referenced as the starting point to conduct the pilot experiment to restore Imjin-Ja. It was confirmed that these Hangul Movable Types were cast with the matrix which separated the upper and lower sides. In other words, while in the female matrix(the lower side of a matrix) the top part of wooden types were planted, the bottom part of types with the shape of a tunnel were either planted or pressed to form the matrix and then pour melted metals in the male matrix(the upper side of a matrix). Third, in the fourth chapter, the success rate for casting movable types reached 60-75% in the pilot experiment to restore Imjin-Ja. Even this success rate is not necessarily considered satisfactory. Therefore, for a better result in the future, some drastic improvement or modification of these methods are required.
