ABSTRACT

Nowadays we witness the problem of limited space to keep the books. Space is one of the most important factors in the environment of library materials preservation. To solve space problem, we have to establish many levels of deposit library. The deposit library functions to preserve library materials. Preservation is defined as ‘preservation’, ‘conservation’ and ‘restoration’. Deposit library, to preserve materials and not for circulation, was established in the Korea Dynasty, and was succeeded by the branch libraries for Historical Deposit Library(史庫) and branch library of Kanghwa magistracy of Kyujang-gak(奎章閣) in the Chosun Dynasty. This study is to analyze the activities of preservation, conservation and reproduction of the branch libraries for Historical Deposit Librariy. After reprinting the Chronological Annals(實錄) in 1605, the branch libraries were established to prevent a risk from fire, warfare, and unusual change of weather. The collections were safeguarded by the regulations for guarding the Historical Deposit Libraries. The collections were preserved, conserved, reproduced and repaired by strict regulations. Through these endeavor, the Chronological Annals endured for those 600 years.
