ABSTRACT

This study is to investigate the interaction between Jikji (the shortest title of Baegun Hwasang Chorok Buljo Jikji Shimche Yojeol) and Buddhist culture. In particular, my aim in this study is to analyze the four aspects: 1) the change in the late Koryo Buddhism; 2) the introduction and development of Iimchison(臨濟禪); 3) Baegunkyonghan and Jikji; 4) the significance of Jikji in the cultural history of Buddhism. The important change in the latter Koryo’s Buddhism was the decline of the Kyo-jong(敎宗) and the emergence of the Son-jong(禪宗). The assembly movements for Buddhist reformation, such as Suson-sa(修禪社) Assembly guided by Jinul(知訥, 1158-1210) and Baekryon-sa(白蓮社) Assembly guided by Yose(了世, 1163-1245), were organized and the new traditions of the Son-jong were founded. In the last years of the Koryo Dynasty, Imchison was introduced from China. Taegobou(太古普愚, 1301-1382) and Naonghyegeun(懶翁惠勤, 1320-1376) encouraged the Ganhwason(看話禪), on the other side, Baegunkyonghan(白雲景閑, 1298-1374) enhanced the Musimson(無心禪). Though the three grestest masters had the different idea of Son(禪觀), they played the infuential role at the close of Koryo’s Buddhism. Jikji consists of two volumes containing selections from various Buddhist works of history and biography such as Chingte Chuanteng-lu(景德傳燈錄) by Tso Yuan(道原) of Sung China and referred one volume which was received from the old priest Shiwu(石屋) The significance of Jikji in the cultural history of Buddhism is to be approved as a transmission book(傳法書), the essence of the real condition and the mind-confirmation(心因) of Buddhism transmitted to next generatopns. The results of this study will be used as fundamental resources in the fields of bibliographical science, Korean studies, Buddhist sciences and others.
