ABSTRACT

This research attempts to discuss the significance of Jikji(直指) and printing by metal movable types(金屬活字 印刷) by analyzing publications by subject, functions and government policy of printing by metal movable types during the early Chosun(朝鮮) Dynasty. The following has was found: 1) Printing and distribution of books by metal movable types were very successfully used to help justify the foundation of Chosun Dynasty by disseminating new knowledge relating to Confucian ideology. Those books printed by metal movable types contributed to the building of a firm infrastructure of national information flow as well as the legitimacy of the New Country.2) Since King Sejong(世宗), printing by metal movable types contributed to the increase of literacy among people and the improvement of their quality of life by illustrating and promoting the proper use of Hangul(한글) and therefore reducing inconvenience in using it.In conclusion, printing by metal movable types flourished during Chosun Dynasty contributed much to the establishment of infrastructure of communication, and the advancement of Chosun Dynasty as a nation with a unique cultural identity.
