ABSTRACT

This study examines how university students utilize media in making their reading decisions. Its main focus is placed on three major issues: where students collect reading information?; how students' favorite media are related with reading genres?; what is the gender difference in using media? This study collected data from 203 male and female students selected by the convenient sampling method during 14 days from September 7 to September 20, 2004. The analysis shows that students' favorite media are TV, newspaper, and web sites, that they are closely related with their reading genres, and that there is a gender difference with regard to reading decisions. Female students utilize more frequently TV, newspapers, and web sites in collecting reading information than male students. They also show a higher level of satisfaction on these media as compared to their counter parts. It is also found that female students are more active in purchasing books introduced by these media.
