ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to lay the foundation for the classification and survey of printing types in the possession of the National Museum of Korea. To achieve this, first I inspected the history how these printing types came into the possession of the National Museum of Korea. The result is the following sequence: Gyujanggak->Yiwangjik(A government office for the Yi Royal Household->Interrogation Bureau of Japanese Colonial Administration-> Councillor Annex of Japanese Colonial Administration->Japanese Colonial Administration Museum. I found out that most of metal printing types were made by or stored at the Gyujanggak, from the records on printing type remaining in Joseonwangjosilok and other documents. I also inspected wooden types of serial carving. It proves that some of the NMK's printing types have origins other than Gyujanggak: some were used at Gyoseogwan before Gyujanggak performed its function as publishing and printing organization, and some were used in the Daehanjeguk period. Besides, steel printing types used in printing "Seonwonsokbo", the genealogical table of Yi Royal Household, are also housed.
