ABSTRACT

More than 14,000 movable metal types were used for printing the second volume of Jikji. They can be classified as normal large types, small types and medium types. Typesettings of movable metal types in Jikji were neither regular nor consistent, when compared with the technology of typesetting in the Joseon Period. Jikji, as the oldest existing movable metal prints in the world, is the valuable research material from which the technology of printing in the Goryeo Period, including te methods of casting and typesetting of movable metal types, could be traced. The classification, comparison, and analysis of all these types used in Jikji confirmed various known facts regarding their characteristics. In this research, the kinds of movable types used for printing Jikji and the characteristics of their typesettings are analyzed and discussed.
