ABSTRACT

The aim of this research is to analyze the general properties of the traditional Korean bookpapers which were made from rice, barley and oats straws (bast fiber mixed with straw). The mixing ratio of straw pulps used for making bookpapers was less than 70%, but generally 30~50%. Some papers were made from the mix of 90% straw pulps and used as sacrificial papers for the memorial services for ancestors. It is assumed that straw papers were made from straw pulps soaked with lime for a long time to remove unnecessary cells and ground into powder, and therefore of relatively good quality.
