AB - The aim of this paper is to review the first volume of the List of Directors of Sosoo-Seowon Academy(紹修書院) mainly for the 16th and 17th centuries, and investigate the characteristics of those Directors in terms of their backgrounds, including the residences, birthplaces, and family names, the age of being appointed to the Director, as well as passing the government service examination, and the length of holding offices in the Academy.The results of the analysis are as follows :Sosoo-Seowon Academy was established in Poonggee(豊基) by Chu Seboong(周世鵬) in 1543, and accredited by King Myungjong(明宗) with the request of Lee Hwang(李滉) in 1549.A total of 181 Directors held offices in this Academy from 1542 to 1718, and on the average every director serves a year. Of the Directors, 93% came from Kyungsangbuk-Do Province(慶尙北道), and especially 87% were from Poonggee(豊基), Soonheung(順興), and YoungJoo(榮州). While the age of Directors ranged 30 to 70 years old, the largest group were in their 40s to 50s.Out of 107 Directors, 47 passed the examination to enter Seonggyunkwan National College called Sangwon-Jinsa-Si(生員進士試), and 14 passed the government service examination called Moonkwa(文科).An analysis of their family names and ancestral homes evidences that of 18 family names, Hwang-Park-An and Kim, in the order of frequency, constituted the largest group. It is surprising to see that none of 107 Directors was Lee Hwang's pupil, which seems to suggest this Academy's independent position.
