ABSTRACT

Gangibang is a medical book lost very long time ago and its title was only found in the references of Uibangyuchwi compiled in 1445, the 27th year in the reign of King Sejong. This book was listed as the 151st reference in Uibangyuchwi in terms of importance, following Eouichwaryo and Biyebaegyobang, but never traced in other medical books. The former contains healing modalities used for royal families in the Goryeo Dynasty and the latter is ascertained to be a medical book during the same period. Thus, this book is presumed to be a medical book which contained Hyangyak, that is, the traditional Korean medical treatment and practices available between the late Goryeo and the early Joseon eras. Thus, this book seems to be a very valuable resource for tracing the development of medical treatment between the late Goryeo and the early Joseon era, because its excerpts are found in numerous sections of the existing 252 volumes of Uibangyuchwi. Therefore, in this study, an effort was made to form the basis of restoring this long-lost medical book by extracting and recovering its content and features from the excerpts and 290 medical formulae that are preserved in Uibangyuchwi, Hyangyakjipseongbang, and Changjinjip; and investigating its basic features.
