AB - The purpose of this study is to investigate the publications of seowon located in Jinju(진주), Gyeongsangnam-do(경상남도). In this study, surveyed are the publications either published or presumed to be published by seowons in Jinju-Gun before 1910.
Out of thirteen seowons, three published three books and possibly four more books. The former include Gakjae-seonsaeng munjib(1844)(「覺齋先生文集」(1844)) published by Daegak Seowon(大覺書院) and Jeongsanji(「鼎山志」) and Neungheo- seonsaeng munjib(「凌虛先生文集」) published by Jeonggang Seowon(鼎崗書院). And the books highly presumed to be published by these seowons include Gakjae-ha-seonsaeng munjib(「覺齋河先生文集」), Songjeong-seonsaeng munjib(「松亭先生文集」), and Gakjae- seonsaeng munjib(foreword in 1813)(「覺齋先生文集」(1813序) related with Daegak Seowon(大覺書院) and Busa-seonsaeng munjib(「浮査先生文集」) related with Imcheon Seowon(臨川書院). For these books, bibliographical information has been described in detail, and it is presented that they were either published by seowons or so presumed.
Through the analysis on these publications, the following facts are found:
First, seowons in Jinju during the Joseon Dynasty mainly published collections of works(문집) categorized into the Subclass of Individual Collections(別集) under the Class of Collection of Works(集部).
Second, all of the above mentioned seven books were published from woodblocks(목판본). As it became more recently, the publishing became more and more frequent.
Third, all of these seven books are directly related to the people to whom those seowons were dedicated. Six were written and one was compiled by those people who were worshipped at these seowons.
