A Study on the Life and Works of Haksan Sin Don-bok

ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the life and works of Haksan Sin Don-bok. The major findings are as follows: (1) Sin Don-bok’s courtesy name is Junghu, and his pen name is Haksan or Gyeongheon. His ancestral home is Yeongsan. (2) Haksan appreciated Hermit-Taoism, Patriotism, and “Practical Learning” which valued the economic enrichment and welfare of people. (3) He wrote three books, that is, Haksan-haneon, Jwagya-budam, and Husaengrok, and some documents, including Haedong-jeondorok-gimun. (4) Haksan-haneon includes 100 pieces of fables, Jwagya-budam describes episodes about 212 men and women of noble birth, and Husaengrok covers 103 titles and 393 items of agricultural and scientific techniques which could help the economic enrichment and welfare of people. (5) In Husaengrok, the item of ‘typecasting’ describes in detail some scientific techniques of movable type printing which include the current technique of typecasting, soil typecasting, Chinese soil block plates, and the current technique of movable wooden types, etc.
