The purpose of this study is to investigate the roles and structure of the commercial publishing during the Japanese Occupation in Jeonju by analyzing the colophons, the activities of 6 major local publishers, and the contents of their publications.
The finding of this study are as follows: An analysis of the colophons shows that books were mostly published during the period of 1909-1937 by such publishers as Tak Jonggil(탁종길), Park Gyeongbo(박경보), Yang Jintae(양진태), Jang Whansun(장환순), Yang Seunggon(양승곤), and printed by Yang Seunggon(양승곤), Yang Yoandeug(양완득), Kim Kwanseon(김관선), Kim Kwangsu(김광수), Yang Changjo(양창조), and Kim Jeongkeun(김정근). The places of publication were Buseo(府西), Daga70, Daga124, Daga123, Bonjeong-1-jeongmok, and Yongjin-myeon Ajung-li. A total of 140 titles were published, and Daga-seopo(다가서포) ranked the top by publishing 49 titles.
Most of those publications belong to the category of literary works, and such books as Chonjamun(천자문), Ahheewonlam(아희원람), Chonhwagjeon(「춘향전」), etc. were published by more than one publishers. In the colophon, the dates of publication and registration were essentially included, and also recorded were the price(except Chilsebang and Yangchakbang), the copyright notice(except Chilsebang), the addresses and names of publishers and printers, bookstores.
