An Analysis of Students of Sosoo-Seowon in the 18th and 19th Centuries:Mainly for 2nd Volume of the Registry of Sosoo-Seowon

ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper is to analyze students composition when to enter Sosoo-Seowon(紹修書院), where to come from, what age to enter, when to pass the government service examination, based on the 2nd volume of the Register List of Sosoo-Seowon. The results of the analysis are as follows : 1,805 students admitted this School during the years of 1790 to 1888, with 10 to 26 new students enter per one year. By the way, in 1850s the size of registered students was the largest. Students came from many areas nearby Kyungsangbuk-Do. 90% of the Students came from Kyungsangbuk-Do. Especially 82% of the Students came from Andong and YoungJoo. The age of students were 15 to 74 years old. But the age of 30s were the largest. The number of the students who passed the examination for admission of Seonggyunkwan National College called Sangwon-Jinsa-Si(生員進士試) among the total 1,805 students was 143. The number of the students who passed the government service examination called Moonkwa(文科) among the total 1,805 students was 61.
