ABSTRACT

In this study, the reading record of King Joong-jong in the Gyeongyeon(經筵) of the Joseon Dynasty was investigated. What and how frequently King Joongjong read in the Gyeongyeon that he had established and his reading habits and behavior were examined from the records of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty Major findings are as follows; The Gyeongyeon was abolished by King Yeonsangun(燕山君) and re-opened by King Joongjong. King Joongjong read 17 titles, including Gangmog(綱目), Noneo(論語), and Daehagyeonye(大學衍義) in the Gyeongyeon during his reign. He had the reading discussions with 272 Gyeongyeongwans and Teukjingwans, and participated in the morning discussions(朝講) 2,703 times, the afternoon discussions(晝講) 1,354 times, and the evening discussions(夕講), 2,053 times. In the later years, King Joongjong participated less and less in those discussions, while he had been very eager to read and discuss in the earlier years of his reign.
