ABSTRACT

Geogasiphoon(거가십훈) was written by Seo Nung(서능) in 1232 and used to teach his young relatives who lacked the knowledge of proper customs. This family precepts of ten items was written, based on the teachings from the Seven Chinese Classics. The first printed book of Geogasiphoon was Goryousijoong- jeorhyoseonsaeng-seogong-geogasiphoon(고려시중절효선생서공거가십훈) published in or immediately after 1578. As a result of this study, the following facts were found: First, Geogasiphoon consists of ten virtues and moral standards that people should keep in mind for their life. Seo Nung’s bibliography for the Seven Chinese Classics includes The Analects of Confucius(논어), The Works of Mencius(맹자), The Doctrine of the Mean(중용), The Canon of History(서경), and The Book of Changes(주역). Second, Seo Nung presented his interpretation of Joojagarye(주자가례) and alternative proposals against the improper funeral rites of Jooja(주자). This record documents that Joojagarye was first originated in the Song Dynasty(송) and later introduced to Korea in the early 13th century during the Goryo Dynasty. Third, Seo Nung was a government official, a dutiful son, and a professor at Sunggyoongwan(성균관). Fourth, he was guarding his grandmother’s grave from 1232 to 1233, during which he wrote Geogasiphoon. Fifth, since there are some variances in texts of Goryousijoong-jeorhyoseonsaeng- seogong-geogasiphoon printed in or immediately after 1578, its later editions and the genealogical tables of his family, this first printed edition helps correct the errors found in the later documents.
