A Study on the Hangeul Materials of Hwaseong-seongyeok-uigwe: An Analysis and Comparison of “Hwasheongsheongyeok” of Dyeongniquigue of the Korean Version

The purpose of this study is to investigate the specific contents of ‘Hwasheongsheongyeok’, a part of ‘Dyeongni-uigwe’, and compare them with the Classical Chinese version of Hwaseong-seongyeok-uigwe, based on the bibliographical analysis of the Korean version of ‘Dyeongni-uigwe’. ‘Hwasheongsheongyeok’ which is a part of the Hangul Uigwe is useful for understanding the patterns of translation from the original Chinese text into Hangul. It is because it provides rich information about how to write in Hangul the names of objects, places and other terms originally written in Chinese. Furthermore, it helps figure out the kinds and volumes of the original documents contained in and the original materials used to write the Hangul Uigwe. ‘Hwasheongsheongyeok’ is primarily useful as fundamental materials for the studies of bibliography and Korean history, and further for the research in diverse areas, including paleography, history, Chinese literature, and archival studies, based on its contents. In addition, it’s also valuable in that it can be used to check the new records of “Hwaseongseongyeok” not included along with the Hangul Eonhae of Hwaseong-seongyeog-uigwe, regarding the Suwon Hwaseong, the world cultural heritage of UNESCO. In the study, the researcher investigated the structure and contents of “Hwasheongsheongyeok”, and tried to organize a kind of the Hangul version of Hwaseong-seongyeog-uigwe by comparing them with the Chinese version of Hwaseong-seongyeog-uigwe, classifying the contents included in both versions, and identifyng the parts only contained in “Hwasheongsheongyeok.” Since it was not a complete book, only the parts which corresponded to the Chinese version are presented in the appendix of this study, according to the table of contents of the Chinese version.

The Current Status of the Old Documents Seen through Prefaces and Epilogues and the Meaning of the Construction of the Korean Prefaces and Epilogues Data Information System

Prefaces and epilogues take a large portion of the old literature in Korea. The Institute of Korean Culture at Korea University has completed the first project, with an aim to establish a knowledge-genealogical research resource, and produced three final reports. The subjects of this project are the prefaces and epilogues extracted from the photographic editions of the old documents as well as the old documents held in selected libraries and institutions. The aim of the second project is to complete a compilation of the prefaces and epilogues of the nonexistent old documents. In this study, the co-researcher of this project presents the significance of the bibliographical investigation and database establishment. The meaning of the prefaces and epilogues can be found through various approaches, including culture-art historical approach, ideological approach and historic-figure approach. The publication-culture approach, in particular, offers the detailed facts regarding compilation, publication and distribution of the old documents. For this project, a total of 1,045 kinds and 8,413 articles of prefaces and epilogues were taken from photographic editions, and 396 kinds and 1,591 articles were from the old documents held in various libraries. They amount to a total of 1,450 kinds and 1,591 articles. The authors of those prefaces and epilogues were in all 2,057 persons and the period of authorship falls mostly in the 18th and 19th century. The prefaces and epilogues written for the same old documents densely belonged to 集部(Jip-bu) and 史部(Sa-bu) and Ha Gyeom-Jin and Gi Wu-Man turned out to be the most productive writers. It is expected that once the analysis on the characteristics of prefaces and epilogues by one author is complete, new prefaces and epilogues could be found more easily. Out of 10,004 articles, a total of 3,694 prefaces and epilogues were from the nonexistent ancient literature. For those articles, 2,536 authors were identified, and some authors were identified thorough their pen-names. The period of compilation falls largely in the 17th through 19th century. The woodblock printed editions were identified from 69 prefaces and epilogues, and they mostly belonged to 史部(Sa-bu) and 集部(Jip-bu). The establishment of ‘Korean prefaces and epilogues data information system’ can be considered significant in the following aspects: it could help modify and supplement comprehensively the existing bibliographies of old documents by providing the specific information about compilation and publication of old documents; it could serve as a base of a contemporary outlook for the intellectual genealogy; it could allow a new recognition of old documents by thoroughly understanding the nonexistent Korean ancient literature; and it could facilitate the release and sharing of the results.

A Research on the Organization, Functions and Operation of the Central Printing Office in the Joseon Period

In this research, the organization, functions and operations of Gyoseogwan(校書館) as the central government printing office in the Joseon Period is comprehensively investigated. First, the organization of Gyoseogwan and its changes are as follows: 1) Gyoesogam(校書監: Gyoseogwan) was first established as the government organization on the Third Level of the official rank where 15 civil ministers worked. Its name was changed into Gyoseogwan and its organization was strengthened with the merger into Sejeokwon(書籍院) in 1401. 2) In 1460, Jujaso(鑄字所) then abolished was merged into Gyoseowan which became the government organization of the Second Rank in 1461. 3) In 1466 Gyoseogwan whose name was changed into Jeongyoseo(典校署), was downgraded to the organization on the Fifth Rank. In 1471, Gangyeong- Dogam(刊經都監) then abolished was merged into Gyoseoqwan without any upgrade in its Rank. 4) In 1484, Jeongyoseo was renamed Gyoseogwan, and again upgraded into the Third Rank. The organization of Gyoseogwan was finally established as the Third Rank in 1485, with the publication of 「Gyeongguk Daejeon(經國大典)」. Second, the functions of Gyoseogwan and its changes are as follows: The functions of Gyoseogwan encompassed ① printing and distribution of books, ② supervision of woodblocks, collections and movable types, ③ supervision of official seals, incenses and prayers, ④ casting of movable types, ⑤ other miscellaneous duties. Especially it is confirmed that printing books with woodblock carved in local provinces and held by Gyoseogwan and distributing them was the core function. In this chapter, it is also maintained that the function of casting movable types should be added. Third, the operations of Gyoseogwan was investigated in this research. With its main function of publishing books, it seems that Gyoseogwan was both directly and indirectly involved with most government publications during the whole period of the Joseon Dynasty.

A Literature Study of Geomyo

‘Geomyo’ (The Gist of autopsy, hereinafter, Geomyo) is a book on forensic medicine written during the period ranging from 1820 to 1865 and its real author is unknown. It is assumed that when this book was written, the occurrence of various accidents rose due to the increase in local governors' work load and deepening of social fluctuations incurred by the intensification of centralized policies; thus, local governors needed practical reference books in order to deal with incidents in the midst of a complicated legal system. Particularly, issuing a death certificate for a murder case was classified to be so important that several books on this topic were compiled, and Keomyo inherited several traditional books on forensic medicine compiled since the reign of King Sejong. Geomyo is composed of chapters on the major topics of autopsy, that is, ‘Geomhom’, and excerpts from the reports of autopsies, that is, ‘Geoman’, and divided into two volumes. The first part of Geomyo contains mostly the excerpts from Jungsu Muwonrok(a revised and expanded edition of the ancient Chinese forensic book published during the Joseon period) and the later part includes some excerpts from the concluding and introductory remarks of ‘Geoman’s. Only ‘Gakcho’ is assumed to include the whole draft of ‘Geoman’, and at the end of the book, few citations from Heumheumshinseo (The instructions on a person’s punishment and imprisonment] and the explanations of technical jargons are included. Geomyo as a casebook for conducting ‘Geomhom’ is very systematically organized to cover the basic procedures of ‘Geomhom’, the excerpts from the introductory and explanatory remarks, arranged according to the causes of deaths, and finally the major elements (such as the principal offender, an accomplice, and infamous criminal, etc.) to be considered in writing ‘Geoman’. Since Geomyo recorded in detail the causes of deaths linked with the state of corpses, it shows the accomplishments and experiences of research in forensic medicine were well accumulated. With these data, we can also assume that there had been a group of experts in autopsy for a long time, and they had accumulated professional knowledge and experiences in forensic medicine. Further, since Geomyo contained a lot of clues which could clearly evidence the terms of forensic medicine at that time, and documented valuable forensic techniques in this area, it can be valued as a indispensable reference source in this field.
