ABSTRACT

The originality of Korean calligraphy was recently much discussed by several theorists of calligraphy. However, it can be concluded that in order to make such discussion more persuasive, it is very important to find a link with other neighboring academic fields. In this study, an attempt is made to connect the characteristics of Korean calligraphy with the theories presented by Andre Eckardt(1884-1971), Yanagi Muneyoshi(1889-1961), and Go Yuseop(1904-1944), who contributed much to the understanding of the originality of Korean art. The result shows that the originality of Korean calligraphy is not different from that of Korean art such as architecture, sculpture, and porcelain, etc.
