ABSTRACT

This study aims to find the defects in the items of Four Category Classification in the 4th edition of KDC and propose a plan to improve them in the 5th edition. In this study, the following issues are investigated: the development of Four Category Classification from the 1st to the 4th edition of KDC, an analysis of the features of Four Category Classification represented in the Oriental decimal classification system in comparison with Four Category Classification in KDC, and the expansion of the topics in Korean studies in KDC. Based on the results from this analysis, a plan to improve the items of Four Category Classification in the 4th edition of KDC is proposed as follows: 1) The items such as ‘Tongrye’, ‘Samryechongeui’, ‘Japrye’, ‘Nonmaeng’ and ‘Hakyong’ originally omitted from the ‘Gyeongjeonryu(經典類)’ are newly added. 2) ‘Jaseoryu(字書類)’ is subdivided, based on CSC. 3) In ‘Geumseokryu(金石類)’, epigraphy and numismatics are rearranged as subdivisions of archeology, and ‘Yugi(遊記)’ are subdivided. 4) ‘Siryeongryu(時令類)’ and ‘Goeuigi(古儀器)’ which were not expanded before, are newly added. 5) In the Class of Anthologies, the chronology of Korean literary history is specified. 6) The topics such as physiognomy, Buddhist scriptures, Oriental medicine, Korean medicine, Korean music and old documents in relation to Korean studies are expanded.
