A Study on the Publication of Medical Books and the Medical Library of Naeuiwon(內醫院) in the Joseon Dynasty

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the publication of medical books and the medical library of Naeuiwon(內醫院) in the Joseon Dynasty. Major findings are as the follows: In the early years of Naeuiwon, doctors actively participated in compiling many medical books, and during the reigns of King Sunjo and Kwanghaegun since the Japanese invasion of the Joseon in 1592 Naeuiwon was directly involved in publishing medical books to print more than 10 titles with wooden movable types. 1. More than 10 titles of medical books were published by Naeuiwon in the Joseon Dynasty. 2. In the early Joseon Dynasty, King Taejong ordered to separate only medical books from Gyoseogwan(校書館) and move them to Naeyakbang(內藥房) to be held. 3. Since then, medical books collected from the inside and outside of the country were continuously held by Naeuiwon which got to serve as a medical library. In this study, the contents of the collection at Naeuiwon as a medical library, medical books with frequent use, and their users were examined in detail.
