Printing and Publishing of Hunryondogam(訓練都監) in the 17th Century

ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper is to explore the procedures which Hunryondogam(訓練都監) established in 1594 got to participate in printing and publishing books, and analyze the subjects, publication dates and styles of wooden movable types of its publications. Major findigs of the analysis are as follows: Since Hunryondogam was established for national security after the Japanese invasion of the Joseon in 1592, the budget for operation was not assigned. Hunryondogam, therefore, run farms cultivated by soldiers to earn money for its operation and wages for soldiers, but because of corruptions and problems, those farms were abolished since the enthronement of Kwanghaekun(光海君). Hunryondogam which used to publish books only for military use and national operations, then, began to publish books for sale in order to make money. There were 92 titles of books printed with wooden movable types by Hunryondogam. An analysis of their subjects shows that 34 titles (37%) were anthologies, the subject of 31 titles (34%) were medical science and military science, and 14 titles (15%) were the Confucian classics. 47 titles (51%) were publisehd in the reign of Kwanghaekun(1608-1623), and 22 titles (24%) and 12 titles (13%) were published in the reign of King Injo(1623-1649) and the reign of King Sunjo(1567-1608), respectively. 28 titles (30%) were printed with wooden movable types in the shape of Ulhae-Ja(乙亥字), and 25 titles (27%) and 9 titles (10%) were printed, with wooden movable types in the shape of Kabin-Ja(甲寅字) and the shape of Kyungo-Ja(庚午字), respectively.
